Crypto Ads On Facebook: A Hit Or A Miss?

Following the crypto boom and ICO mania of December 2017 and January 2018, where Bitcoin and Ethereum saw their values double and initial coin offerings (ICOs) raised billions, Meta banned Facebook cryptocurrency advertising and ICO ads, citing trust concerns.

Meta's Evolving Stance on Crypto Advertising

Meta has recently relaxed its strict stance on crypto ads on Facebook, aligning with its focus on developing the metaverse and advancing blockchain projects like Diem and Novi. Initially allowing limited ads for crypto events, news, and licensed businesses by mid-2018, Meta has now updated its policy to permit NFT (Non-Fungible Token) ads without prior approval. 

This change is important given NFTs’ role in Meta’s metaverse vision, emphasising digital assets and virtual worlds. Despite these adjustments, Meta maintains stringent guidelines, requiring adherence to regulations from 27 recognised agencies, including Lithuania’s FCIS, which is crucial for major exchanges like Binance.
